About termites

Termites are small, pale insects that live in large colonies and feed on cellulose, the material found in wood, paper, cardboard and even some fabrics. A single colony can contain thousands to millions of termites, each with a role: workers, soldiers and reproductives.

In Delhi NCR, subterranean termites are the most common. They live in the soil and build mud tubes to travel into buildings without being exposed to open air, which is why an infestation often goes unnoticed for months.

Where they're found

• Wooden door and window frames
• Built-in wardrobes, kitchen cabinets and furniture
• Wooden flooring and skirting
• Stored books, papers and cardboard boxes
• Damp walls and foundations

Why they're a problem

• They eat wood from the inside, so damage is often hidden until it's serious
• Repairing or replacing woodwork and furniture is expensive
• Colonies keep growing and spreading to new areas of the building
• Swarms of winged termites can appear indoors, especially after rain
