About cockroaches

Cockroaches are hardy, fast-moving insects that thrive in warm, humid places close to food and water. The German cockroach (small, light brown) and the American cockroach (large, reddish-brown) are the most common in Indian homes and businesses.

They are mostly active at night and hide during the day in tight cracks and crevices. One female can produce hundreds of offspring in her lifetime, so a few cockroaches can quickly become a large infestation.

Where they're found

• Kitchens, especially behind and under appliances
• Bathrooms, drains and sewer lines
• Cracks in walls, tiles and cabinets
• Restaurants, hotels and food storage areas
• Garbage areas and electrical boxes

Why they're a problem

• They carry bacteria that can cause food poisoning and stomach infections
• Their droppings and shed skins can trigger allergies and asthma
• They contaminate food, utensils and surfaces
• They multiply very quickly and are hard to control with home remedies
