About spiders

Spiders are eight-legged arachnids, not insects. They feed on other insects, catching them in webs or hunting them directly. Common household spiders include cellar spiders with long thin legs, house spiders that build messy webs in corners, and jumping spiders.

Most house spiders are harmless to people, but they multiply quickly, leave webs everywhere, and a lot of spiders usually means there are plenty of other insects for them to feed on.

Where they're found

• Ceiling corners, behind furniture and wardrobes
• Storerooms, basements and garages
• Window frames, balconies and door gaps
• Rarely-used rooms and cluttered areas
• Outdoor lights that attract insects

Why they're a problem

• Webs and egg sacs make homes and offices look dirty and neglected
• Some species can bite, causing pain, swelling or irritation
• Many people have a strong fear of spiders
• A spider problem often signals another insect infestation
