About bed bugs

Bed bugs are small, flat, reddish-brown insects about the size of an apple seed. They feed only on blood, usually at night while people are asleep, and then hide in tiny gaps close to where people rest.

They don't fly or jump, but they travel easily in luggage, used furniture, bags and clothing. That's why they're common in homes, hostels, hotels and anywhere with frequent visitors.

Where they're found

• Mattress seams, bed frames and headboards
• Sofas, chairs and cushions
• Behind wallpaper, photo frames and switchboards
• Curtains and bedside furniture
• Luggage and bags after travel

Why they're a problem

• Itchy, red bites that often appear in lines or clusters
• Loss of sleep and anxiety from ongoing bites
• Eggs are tiny and hidden, so infestations come back if not fully treated
• They spread easily from room to room and between homes
