About centipedes

Centipedes are long, flat creatures with one pair of legs on each body segment. They're fast-moving predators that hunt insects and spiders at night, using venom from modified front legs to catch their prey.

They need moisture to survive, so they usually come indoors looking for damp, dark places, especially during the monsoon. The house centipede, with its very long legs, is the one most often seen in homes.

Where they're found

• Bathrooms, drains and under sinks
• Basements, storerooms and damp corners
• Under stones, pots and garden debris
• Cracks in walls and floors
• Kitchens and laundry areas

Why they're a problem

• Larger centipedes can give a painful bite that causes swelling
• They move very fast and can frighten children and adults
• Their presence usually means there's dampness and other insects to feed on
• They hide in cracks during the day, so they're hard to find
